Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has introduced requirements for ships whose structural calculations are verified for compliance with RS Rules using specialized RS software during the review of technical documentation.

The updates were introduced in the December Rule Change Notice to the Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships, the provisions of which entered into force on January 1, 2024. The document is available in the section "RS Publications" on the official RS website. Vessels meeting the new requirements may be assigned additional distinguishing marks at the request of the shipowner:

  • ODYSS(Hull) - may be added to the character of classification of ships for which RS software is used to check the hull structures for compliance with the requirements of the RS Rules;
  • ODYSS(Rudder) - may be added to the character of classification of ships for which RS software is used to check rudder strength for compliance with the requirements of the RS rules;
  • ODYSS(Tank C) – may be added to the character of classification of LG carriers for which RS software is used to check the type C tank structures for compliance with the requirements of the RS rules

The calculation results obtained using RS software are also considered when reviewing technical documentation for ships accepted to the RS class from the class of an ACS-IACS member and which, at the request of the shipowner, need to retain the permissible navigation conditions established by the ACS-IACS member but differing from those specified in the RS requirements. Such ships may be assigned an additional distinguishing mark for special restricted area of navigation R(special).
