Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) is expanding its scope of services for vessels. A new service for the issuance of an Ice safety passport is available as of September 15, 2023.

According to Alexey Zakharov, Head of the R&D and Engineering Division, the service is oriented towards vessels of the active fleet. An Ice safety passport can be issued both for ships in the RS class and ships in other classes, regardless of whether the vessel has been assigned an RS ice class. In the process of developing the document and in accordance to its own methodology, RS performs necessary calculations of the ship’s side structure and the parameters of the power plant and propulsion system. In light of the vessel's design features, RS calculates permissible scenarios and optimal operating modes (speed, distance during icebreaker pilotage, etc.) that ensure that risks of hull damage are reduced in ice conditions.

“A detailed engineering assessment implemented in the format of an Ice safety passport allows to expand the operational capabilities of the active fleet falling under ice categories Ice1- Ice3 and Arc4 - Arc5 and therefore providing further impetus for increasing the volume of cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route," noted the RS specialist.

RS has presented detailed information on the terms and format of the new service at the conference RS in the context of the current times. RS Engineering and Consulting Center within the framework of the International Exhibition NEVA-2023.
