RS class: Construction of new trawlers begins at Vyborg Shipyard

Construction of a new series of new generation fishing processing trawlers to the RS (Russian Maritime Register of Shipping) class begins at Vyborg Shipyard PJSC. The laying ceremony for the first section of a prototype ship series was held on 31 May 2017 at the production areas of Vyborg Shipyard PJSC (a corporate member of the United Shipbuilding Corporation).

The ship is being constructed for JSC ''Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet''. The official event was attended by the representatives of the customer, the RF Ministry of Agriculture, the Federal Agency for Fishery, the United Shipbuilding Corporation, suppliers and partners of the shipyard. Konstantin Palnikov, RS Director General, made a speech at the ceremony on behalf of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

Konstantin Palnikov, RS Director General, noted: ''RS contributes to the safe operation of the current fishing fleet of Russia and actively participates in the implementation of lofty agenda for its renovation. Today, over 1,000 fishing vessels with the RS class are in operation. Currently, the series construction of the modern technologically sophisticated fishing fleet is one of the high-priority tasks facing the industry''.

A new trawler is designed with regard to its operation in the freezing seas. The hull ice strengthening will enable effective fishery in the Northern and Far East sea basins. It will be fitted with powerful cargo cranes, a trawl complex of the latest generation and an automatic palletizing system of products in the hold to minimize the time for unloading the catches. An automated plant for processing and production of fillet, fish meal plant, equipment for fish oil production and a canning plant are to be installed on board the trawler.

Main particulars:

  • length overall Ц 86 m;
  • breadth Ц 17 m;
  • moulded depth Ц 6.75 m;
  • deadweight Ц 2992.5 t;
  • speed Ц 15 knots.

The new project design versatility ensures different modifications of fishing and processing equipment to be mounted on the ships of the series allowing to catch not only bottom fish, but also pelagic species, shrimps and other aquatic bioresources. The first ship is to be delivered to the customer by March 2019. A total of four trawlers are scheduled in the series.

The modern projects to renovate the fishing fleet involving RS include construction of a series of trawler-seiners of Project SK-3101R designed for fishing using bottom and pelagic trawls, Danish seine and seiner net at JSC Shipyard ''Yantar'', Kaliningrad. The advances storage technology comprising six seawater cooled cargo tanks (RSW type) of 800 cub. m in capacity will enable to keep the catch fresh within seven days. The series of three ships is to be constructed in 2018.

The highly automated fishing vessel of Project PL475 designed for longline fishing with application of sustainable methods and advanced fish processing technology was earlier constructed at Leningrad shipyard "PELLA", Otradnoye. The vessel's production capacity is up to 500 t per day. Deep freezing and catch storage facility in a low-temperature cargo spaces allow to preserve the quality of products during shipment to ports.
