RS and IACS

RS joined the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) in 1969 and currently complies with all of its technical requirements for the design, construction, maintenance and survey of ships and other marine related facilities. IACS establishes, reviews, promotes and develops minimum technical requirements in relation to the design, construction, maintenance and survey of ships and other marine related facilities; assists international regulatory bodies and standard organizations to develop, implement and interpret statutory regulations and industry standards in ship design, construction and maintenance, with a view to improving safety at sea and marine environmental protection.

In its work, the Association strives to follow the highest professional standards. This is achieved through the effective use by the IACS members of the internal quality management systems that comply with the IACS Quality System Certification Scheme (QSCS) based on ISO 9001 and their regular audits.

In accordance with its stated objectives, IACS develops technical and procedural requirements, unified interpretations of international conventions, the IACS Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers and Oil Tankers, interacts with national and international organizations of the maritime industry (IMO, EU, ILO, ISO, INTERTANKO, etc.).

More information on IACS, including its technical requirements, is available at its website www.iacs.org.uk
